You’re right those usually aren’t taught but that’s very different than denying they happened. Honestly, it’s more effective too probably. China denying it is part of why it keeps being brought up. They’re in too deep now, but if they had just said “yeah, it happened and it’s regretful” then people probably wouldn’t bring it up all the time.

  • For Syncthing? All you do is point it to the folder where it is (or where you want it to be if it’s not on the device yet). Then you tell it that you want to send and receive changes for that folder, and repeat this for all devices you want synched. It’s very simple. Just play with it and you should be able to get it working.

One thing to note is it needs to be running to synch obviously, so if it hasn’t been running don’t expect your database to be updated.

  • I had a few times on Windows with niche discontinued products. Not really a huge issue but it didn’t work out of the box.

Here’s your issue with Linux: You’re expecting it to work identically as Windows does. They’re different systems with different issues and solutions. I use Syncthing to sync my Keepass database updated between devices. It’s very simple and easy to use.

Go into Linux unburdened with the expectation that everything should work the same and you’ll have a better time. You have to acclimate to the new environment, but you did the same with Windows. You got used to how bad Windows is to use. Linux is generally easier, in my opinion, once you’re used to it. It isn’t Windows though so you have to learn new things.

Well, cooking normally doesn’t require rising. Baking usually does. Knowing how chemicals react and how yeast acts is important. Cooking is mostly just about flavor. You should know about the Maillard reaction and burning, but as long as the flavors are good (and you don’t cook something that’ll make you sick) then you’re going to be fine.

Personally, I didn’t like it. I think a lot of it comes down to two things: Do you care about the writing and the world they’ve built? If so, how critical of it are you (or alternatively, have you seen the sci-fi tropes done well).

Starfield has some really bad world building. In particular, it doesn’t understand why we use sci-fi, and why it’s tropes are interesting. it’s to create an anologue of our world and to break it down, criticize, and point out it’s flaws and ways to fix them.

Starfield is the least critical writing I’ve ever seen I think. The Earth is destroyed, and instead of using this to discuss us destroying the planet right now, it’s just some technobable that has no parallels. Also, when fleeing Earth, they don’t try to solve issues. They just set up new corporations doing the exact same stuff in other places. When the game presents a problem where taking down a CEO would be one of the best possible outcomes, it isn’t an option. Literally everything you do in the game is maintaining the status-quo of the modern world, despite it being the source of so many issues in the game. You can’t change anything and no one wants to either.

Starfield doesn’t understand sci-fi. Fallout does a better job as a sci-fi series than Starfield does. If you’re still interested, the gameplay is also slow and boring and there’s almost no interesting stories or characters. Continue if you want, but I regret spending time on it for the price of $0, and I generally love Bethesda games and the sci-fi genre (although, as mentioned above, I think this is part of why I don’t like it).

I don’t get the Balatro addiction stuff. It’s a good game, but after you’ve played it a few times it gets boring. Sure, “number go up” but it’s like people have never played a video game before. There’s so many Skinner boxes that, at least for me personally, it becomes numbing. I also don’t easily get sucked into other manipulative addicting things in other games though, so maybe it’s just something wrong with me.

What makes you continue playing Balatro after you’ve “figured it out?”

  • GamePass on the cloud works, but MS has made a choice to not let it work on Linux. This is not an issue with Linux. It’s an issue with MS and Windows. They choose to distribute the games using a proprietary encryption method, which harms the user’s experience and makes it only work on Windows. You can’t mod your games (unless the explicitly allow it and let you decrypt it) because “fuck you, this is ours.” Fuck them. If they want my money they can make a better product that works where I want to be. You should hold yourself to that level too, not lick their boot and thank them for the privilege.

  • Yeah, on top of not having to deal with applications checking for updates when they’re launched, and then manually installing them, not having to deal with drivers is amazing. Windows users talk about how easy the experience is with Windows, but they’re just used to how shitty it is and haven’t seen the alternative. I just occasionally update everything in my system when I think about it and it’s good to go. No being forced to update and restart. No hassle. Just simple and quick and everything is up-to-date.

  • It feels like the trend is changing in that direction, but most games weren’t released in the past year or so, and even those were designed and built not thinking Linux would be where it is now. We’ll have to see how it evolves.

I agree that a lot of large publishers seem to be actively harming the experience to ensure Linux users can’t use their service, for whatever reason. That needs to change. They need to be punished for this, ideally by helping people switch to Linux and making them realize they don’t need those games if they don’t care about them as a user.

  • Linux is free, and pretty much all hardware is compatible. AMD GPUs have a small advantage with their open source drivers, but Nvidia cards still function 99.9% of the time as far as I’m aware. You don’t need to worry about it. Just install Linux and you’re likely good to go.

SteamOS is not modern. It isn’t what the Deck is using. (This may change soon and they may open it up.) I use Garuda and I really like it. It’s what I’d recommend for anyone looking to do gaming. It comes with a bunch of gaming stuff pre-installed and a tool to quickly install anything extra you may need.
