I’ve come across multiple times situations which arise from known issues leading to a worsened experience for the user. Linux cannot solve all problems, some are difficult to solve or some require solutions which may not be possible to be resolved but in any case, what the user usually misses, is that the OS identifies these situations and inform the user.

In this case, Jay would’ve really been off better if the user interface was able to simply inform the user of the circumstances or the limitations that it had detected.

I feel you are a bit out of touch when the topic is specifically enshittification and that it is based on the history of companies turning against their users, showing little good faith. It is also not something which is sparing open source projects (remember bitwarden’s attempt?). So sure, I’m not going to deny that I’m making assumptions and that I am concerned it may one day happen. But it is grounded in reality, not some tinfoil hat stuff.

Edit: and the fact that bitwarden did not eventually go through with it does not counter the fact that they intended to and tried. Sometimes companies back off and play the long game and try to be more subtle about it.

1. Tailscale has an employee who is contributing to headscale. I think this is helpful and they could decide to stop this collaboration the moment they feel it is counter productive.
2. they may decide to start adding undocumented/proprietary/“secure” elements which prevent headscale from working.

There is no guarantee headscale can keep working the way it does or that it is allowed to keep existing.

Edit: FYI headscale is not at all at feature parity with what tailscale offers.

I started playing with Ramalama (the name is a mouthful) and it works great. There is one or two more steps in the setup but I’ve achieved great performance and the project is making good use of standards (OCI, jinja, unmodified llama.cpp, from what I understand).

Go and check it out, they are compatible with models from HF and Ollama too.

What issues do you encounter when you say they “don’t work right”?

How reliable is sleep? Does it actually go to sleep? Is the battery drain in sleep acceptable? Does it come out of sleep without issue? Is it fast to go to sleep and resume from sleep?

My experience with the steam deck has been absolutely stellar regarding sleep, to the point is has been a game changer. So fast to pick up for a quick game and put back to sleep even if playing just for a minute. It’s reliable and the battery drain is acceptable maybe (roughly 10% per 24h but didn’t measure it explicitly).

If it were throttling, you would see reduced clock speeds and/or reduced power. However, I’m not seeing any graphs for frequencies and power. Have you checked?

Have you explored your GPU and CPU and memory utilization? On Linux, mangohud is a great tool for this. Verify which component is bottlenecking you performance, you may see something happening when your performance drops.

If something is visible, you may want to target it for an upgrade. If not, something else may be an issue. You may also compare with a fresh setup of nobara just to rule out any misconfiguration or other driver related issues?

Would you be able to share more info? I remember reading their issues with docker, but I don’t recall reading about whether or what they switched to. What is it now?

Tldw: guy tests the RX 6800 at 1080p, 1440p and 4k across 19 games on Windows 11 vs Nobara 41.

Allegedly, nobara beats windows on all games except 2 (witcher 3 and CS2), across almost all resolutions, by around single digit percents.

Not impossible that it is a coincidence but the probability that it is just fell way lower.

If the probability that it a 5090 experiences this issue is 1%, then the probaility that both devices fail is 0.01%. Not impossible, but very unlikely.

Regarding photos, and videos specifically:

I know you said you are starting with selfhosting so your question was focusing on that, but I would like to also share my experience with ente which has been working beautifully for my family, partner and myself. They are truly end to end encrypted, with the source code available on github.

They have reasonable prices. If you feel adventurous you can actually also host it yourself. They have advanced search features and face recognition which all run on device (since they can’t access your data) and it works very well. They have great sharing and collaborating features and don’t lock features behind accounts so you can actually gather memories from people on your quota by just sharing a link. You can also have a shared family plan.

Ollama is very useful but also rather barebones. I recommend installing Open-Webui to manage models and conversations. It will also be useful if you want to tweak more advanced settings like system prompts, seed, temperature and others.

You can install open-webui using docker or just pip, which is enough if you only care about serving yourself.

Edit: open-webui also renders markdown, which makes formatting and reading much more appealing and useful.

Edit2: you can also plug ollama into continue.dev, an extension to vscode which brings the LLM capabilities to your IDE.

I have numerous files which I am intentionally maintaining to improve seeding availability but I’ve always been bothered by how little they seed. Yet somehow while those same files are downloaded, seeding is great. Is this also a case of port forwarding being to blame? I do not have it enabled.

I’m pretty certain these kind of commitments would almost never see the light of day, all the way through, in public companies. Most companies give it a shot and if its not generating profits after 3 years, they kill it and the CEO gets fired.
