I think what the author describes as the culture of Whatever is also a big reason everything kinda sucks now. It’s all run by MBAs who have no relation to the product and have no vision except “line goes up”. They have no incentive to care about the product they’re offering because they couldn’t care less about it.

Honestly, knowing people who mod Civics, I wouldn’t be surprised of this has already been done somewhere in the world.

I think you’re overestimating the tech savvyness of the average person :P
Paragraph 4.5 of Google Play’s Developer Distribution Agreement is a rather large barrier. I’ll paste it here:
4.5 You may not use Google Play to distribute or make available any Product that has a purpose that facilitates the distribution of software applications and games for use on Android devices outside of Google Play.
I’d wager the majority of Android users have never downloaded an application other than from the Google Play Store. Even among those who would try, a large amount of them would probably get scared off by the “unverified sources” popup Android gives you if you try to install an app in another manner.
You almost never hear someone tell a good joke about steaks. It really is a rare medium well done.
I knew a fortune teller, she was rather short but she told me a great joke about steak. Unfortunately, she went missing a while ago and no one knows where she is.
She’s just a small medium at large now.

While I agree that framing the Proton CEO as an evil Nazi lapdog is a bit much, here’s a comment I saw on Lemmy another time this was discussed that explains why the article is flawed better than I could.

Any ports used in docker will be open on your computer and accessible to any device in your network.
However, to open up a port to the internet, you’d have to do port-forwarding on your router. If you haven’t done that, any incoming connections will just be dropped at the router-level.

I’ve heard Hetzner is quick to crack down on piracy. Some VPS hosters advertise that they don’t acknowledge DMCA requests, such as Njalla and 1984 (I’ve never used these, just found them by searching Lemmy). If you want to go with a traditional hoster I’ll echo what the other person said and recommend Gluetun to bind your container to a VPN service.
For security, if it’s just for you and your partner I’d just setup a Wireguard server on the VPS and tunnel into it that way. You’ll have to setup the VPN on any device you want to access your server with, which is a hassle, but I’d much prefer the small hassle than the constant worrying of hosting publicly-accessible services. Otherwise, I’d setup something like Crowdsec or Fail2Ban.

I’ve tried and I found it difficult to engage in good-faith conversation with them.
Evkob (they/them)@lemmy.cato Selfhosted@lemmy.world•I add two docker containers via CLI and suddenly I can't ssh into my machine or access any local container.... what happened??English5·5 months agoThey meant pinging your server from another device, I assume.
What error(s) do you get when you try to SSH into your server?
By “can’t access containers”, I assume you mean via devices you’re trying to connect to the server with? Can you still access the stuff you’re running in the containers directly on the server via localhost?
I’ll echo what the other commenter’s have said and you need to give us more info. “I added two containers” is pretty much useless if that’s all we have to go off of to start troubleshooting. More details on what exactly you did, any troubleshooting steps you’ve already tried, what specific errors you get, etc.

I was having issues getting my Android device to use my local DNS server over VPN, what worked for me was setting it up through RethinkDNS. There’s a setting to prevent DNS leaks by capturing all traffic on port 53 and directing it to the DNS server you set. It doesn’t feel like an elegant solution but hey, it works.
Note, you’ll have to make sure your private DNS setting is off, in the internet section of the system settings.
I’ve recently bought a Steam Deck and have been getting back into gaming after a long hiatus.
I used to play competitive online games (mostly Counter-Strike) and got kinda burnt out on them. It made me not want to game for a while, so I’m diving into slower-paced, single-player games.
Viewfinder and Superliminal are both perspective-based puzzle games that I’ve been really enjoying. Tickles my brain in kind of the same way the Portal games did on my first playthroughs.
Speaking of Portal, I’ve also started Portal: Revolution which is a fan-made mod whose story takes place between the two official games. For what it is, it’s honestly quite excellent, the puzzles are challenging and fun. Not quite as well-polished as Portal 2, but so far it’s giving the first game a run for its money.
I’ve also been emulating a ton of Mario Kart 8, trying to git gud, my friend group often breaks it out at get-togethers and I want to surprise them with my sudden increase in skill!
EDIT: I forgot, I’ve also been playing Stray which is honestly such a chill game, you play as a stray cat in this kinda post-apocalyptic world, which you slowly uncover more info about as you hop around. 10/10 so far, might become a catgirl.
