As the Fediverse continues to expand, we’re looking at other platforms we can run with our ethos - open federation, user choice, and fair moderation.
We’ve seen lots of talk about Piefed, and the benefits of the platform, such as better moderation, combining multiple communities into topics i.e piefed.zip/topic/cats, and the ability for users to better control their own experience.
To that end, we’ve decided to run our own Piefed instance, located at piefed.zip (I know, original!)
This is very much still under construction, but we feel is now able to accept new users, should anyone wish to join.

So, as many here, I joined Lemmy two years ago following the reddit change regarding their API policy. I always have been rather open-source enthusiast (even though that I became less extreme with years and professional computer science experience, as a student I was a bit more utopist), so Lemmy seemed to me the perfect replacement.
I was not disappointed and, as an end-user, I still enjoy Lemmy better than I had ever liked reddit. However, during the two years that I have been using Lemmy and the grow of the user base, l experienced two instances shutdown, my first one shutdown overnight without any warning and, just now, lemm.ee is shutting down because moderation become unmanageable for instance admins.
So this bring me to my point, since reaction to posts about lemm.ee shutdown, I hear a lot speaking about piefed. Is piefed somehow better than lemmy? Is it right that lemmy communities are accessible through piefed? What are arguments for switching to piefed or to remain on lemmy?
Do you know any good threads, blog post, whatever discussing this, that can help me figure out?
Hey, so better is more of an objective term - piefed offers a more comprehensive moderation experience for admins and mods, and addresses some of the issues that users raise around multiple communities and account settings etc.
Piefed runs on activitypub just like lemmy does, so are compatible with eachother - you probably already see piefed users and communities in your lemmy feed.
I wouldn’t say there is an argument either way from a user perspective- I’d encourage people to try both and see what they like.
There are no front ends yet that work with piefed (like tesseract or photon) but they’re being worked on. There’s also only a few apps, but similarly these are being worked on too, so before long you can probably interact with either software through an app.
Lemmy was the first and so is the most popular, and I hope the devs are able to bring some of the moderation features over to lemmy too, as it is quite a limited experience in comparison to many fediverse softwares.

I’m curious what performance and resource usage is like. Building a social media service in Python seems unusual.
We will be doing our usual server updates for piefed as well so will share this info!
I find that sentiment weird. Python is a popular language for social networks. Instagram, threads, and some parts of the clusterfuck that is facebook are written in python.
