It could also ideally work on private data like DMs. The idea also includes having the URL as tagged unencrypted metadata on the image, that anyone can access by opening the image in a metadata website (or the hypothetical authenticity checking service)

That’s why having the URL as part of the hash is important. I’m thinking less for real photos and more for ‘screenshot of a deleted tweet’ sort of things.

the obvious solution is to sacrifice control of your software and hardware to some proprietary third-party system that presumably has no stake in the outcome, but that causes more problems than it solves.

Yes, I can imagine a world in which some company has a system like this, and then could discreetly delete hashes from the database if they see the original image and realize that it shows evidence of something they don’t like.

If it would be used for actual investigative journalism or criminal evidence, its giving that company a lot of power.

It would actually be convenient to have a screenshot feature that also automatically links to the latest archive of the website

there are situations though where that doesn’t work, such as if this can only be seen on your account, like if you take a screenshot of a DM or something

Anyways, it has a normal camera, a wide angle camera, a 3x zoom camera, and the last one is not a camera but an ambient light sensor and 13 channel light sensor (I think? its hard to find info on this actually)

I feel like kinda the main reasons to pick up a latest gen gpu nowadays are energy efficiency and a warranty (although 5000 series doesn’t look all that energy efficient, we’ll see i guess)

otherwise you can definitely get something better on ebay for cheaper

but if you live somewhere where energy is expensive, the difference might be significant. 500w is kinda a lot lol, any difference in performance/watt will add up

I use firefox, I mostly like it, but it still doesn’t support chromium style tab groups (no, that one extension is not similar), and its webgpu implementation also doesn’t work on most websites more than a year after Google made their version available by default

I got some used chromebooks on Ebay for $40 each (3855u, 4gb ram, 32gb ssd), I would recommend them if you don’t have any money to spend on a laptop. It’s not going to be running anything super demanding, but its shocking how much it can do.

Some things I have run on it and had a decent experience: Blender, FreeCAD, Portal, TMNF through proton, Celeste, Minecraft Java, MuseScore

ARM is in the perfect place where, if a company using their architecture succeeds, they get tons of money, and if the company fails, they lose nothing.

Apple has published papers on small LLM models and multimodal models already. I would be surprised if they aren’t using them for on-device processing.
