It’s not the internet job to safeguard your kids. That’s the bottom line. All of this regulation and moderation is just stepping stones further to a controlled and moderated internet. Y’all just want to slowly add more and more limitations and training wheels to life and you’re giving up our own freedoms and rights to do it.
Tell me, who decides where the line is drown between allowable and not allowed? How are millions of hours of content supposed to be moderated by decency police to make that decision? How well do you think something automated can be that would do it?
The fine isn’t the point. Yeah, ten million is nothing to a large company. But what it really does is create censorship “for the children”.
By your logic, just blame the parents. They have the ultimate responsibility.
Right. And how are you supposed to train an algorithm to filter out any stupid thing a kid might try that’s dangerous? The possibilities are endless. Maybe the parents shouldn’t let their 13 year olds have unrestricted phones and access to tik tok.
I can’t hold them responsible for every dumb thing kids spread and try doing on their platform. You can’t expect everything to get regulated and removed in an instant. Watch your damned kids and don’t let them have tik tok to begin with. Then accept that a person dying isn’t always someone else’s fault. Your kid dying because he seen a thing on the internet to take a bunch of benadryl, then goes and steals your benadryl and overdoses on it, isn’t the internets fault.
I hate tik tok, but this is so dumb. Right down to the bullshit of requiring an office in Venezuela in a mere 8 days. Like 8 days is a realistic amount of time to set up and run an office in a foreign country.
Kids have been doing idiotic shit to themselves since the dawn of time. Tik tok or youtube didn’t cause this. Even back in the days before internet existed there was a “challenge” in my grade school where you touched your toes twenty times real fast and than had the big guy in class squeeze you in a bear hug from behind to make you pass out. Pretty sure that on killed some kids too.
Google Maps on my smartphone is God tier.
I drove in the before times. You have any idea how much of a pain in the ass it was to use a paper map or look at written directions and miss a turn? Do you realize how great it is to type in “food near me” and see everywhere you might want to stop for a bite to eat and right where it’s at? That I can youch a business name on the screen and it will show me its hours they’re open? How n8ce it is that I don’t even have to look away from the road and have nice lady robot voice tell me to turn right 2 miles?
I could give up a lot of my smartphone stuff and not have it be “for the worse”, but im keeping the mapping stuff.

Today’s issue is that all the high end stuff takes up space and needs surface area to keep cool. Shrinking it all down for a market there isn’t a large demand for is hard, and then having to put a smaller battery in it is also hard. I take phones apart quite often. Even the big ones don’t have much unused space.
Stuff got too easy to really have to delve into a deeper understanding, most of the time, now. No jumpers, no dip switches, no pre-loading drivers or plugs that can be plugged into places they shouldn’t get plugged into. Everything is color coded and plug n play. You don’t have to dive in and assign com ports or anything.
I learned as I went because I wanted to get shit to work and that took a lot of educating to get there. Now, most of the time the situation doesn’t come up, so that deeper understanding is a building block that just got skipped over. The offshoot is that when the more rare occasion arises that a deeper understanding is required, it’s usually got a person way behind the 8 ball to be able to recognize and fix the issue.

Ublock on Firefox still leaves it work great, actually. I use it like 95% of the time, still. Just don’t touch it without.

But unlike cassette tapes (that were still quite popular if you were an earlier millennial, plus Guardians of the Galaxy) slide projectors that are often shown in many movies and TV shows (and again, used in school when millennials where there) and vinyl that had made a big resurgence and is still sold today; pagers were pretty much extinct in the US by the time the first gen z kid came into existence.
Obviously, some of them will know what they are, but I’d bet like half wouldn’t.
