I’ve used both Mull and Iceraven on phone, Librewolf on desktop. I went back to stock FF and tweaked it on desktop because it was tuned differently than I wanted - Particularly when it came to dark mode support. On phone I always settled for Iceraven but it’s miles behind chromium forks when it comes to tab management (ironically, FF is miles ahead when it comes to tab management on desktop).

No, my solution is ditching the entire overbloated web standards we have today and go the small web route where idealists can make useable software without being a giant organisation, targeted both by commercial and state interests.

But that’s not going to happen any more than Mozilla will go back to being a decent org.

Different threat models have different necessities. I believe a regular user should avoid Google ( or rather all of GAFAMBATX) connections at all costs. I think everybody (me included, of course) is better off with a dumbphone than a Degoogled phone.

It’s obvious we have different opinions, I respect your right to run any system as you want. I don’t think I have any more to contribute to this topic.

What do you mean by trusting? I trust Mozilla to increase the executives wages at the cost of everybody in the organisation. I trust that they’ll incorporate more and more features I find unwanted. Privacy-wise I haven’t trusted Mozilla since telemetry was opt-out. Security wise I haven’t trusted any browser for decades.

I’ve just given up on Mozilla, using Cromite after a decade of Firefox/Fennec on desktop and mobile had been such an upgrade.

What sort of performance are you looking for? I run NC’s from Raspberry Pi’s, no problem.

I know, that’s why I advocate for going Google free from the outset.

De-googling is not enough, there must be nothing to de-Google from the start.

Syncthing is like a base layer for a personal P2P system, beyond the basic file sync I use Syncthing to sync Joplin Notes, Money Manager Ex, KeePass, RetroShare and what ever else I can.

I haven’t considered Google android as usable for like a decade, went down the custom ROM route and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done when it comes to mobile use.

Being able to install what ever operating system I want is a hard make or break for me when it comes to purchases ever since.

Last time I checked, Nextcloud Talk android app simply refuse to implement any sort of pull system. If one’s using a google-less phone one needs to set up a push system on top (I’ve never managed to get the NC push system to work properly). There’s even a separate “Nextcloud Notification checker” app on F-Droid to remedy the problem. It’s all a bit silly.

I recently checked up on the status of the built in E2EE in NC when deciding what sort of encryption I wanted for data at rest on a self-hosted system. People are still complaining about data loss and horrible bugs. I’ve been burned before and stay well away from that half-baked implementation. I just use Cryptomator instead.

On the other hand NC supports AI implementation, there’s machine learning that sets EVERY SINGLE MAIL to important in the mail app and the ActivitiyPub based Nextcloud Social have almost worked for many years so that’s nice.
