ZFS is an enterprise software RAID, and 1:1 RAM to TB is the minimum recommended requirement for a production server (e.g. enterprise implementations).
I’ve seen many users stating they have far far less than 1:1 without issues. I recall a r/DataHoarder user saying they have 100+ TB’s and only 16 or 32GB RAM, which is not fully utilized, so it all depends on your usage profile and the size/scale of r/w ops occurring during peak periods.
That wasn’t what was reported, and is largely false. What was reported is that people are buying NEW drives which have FARM values indicating years of use. Also the most likely cause being a crypto project going under, and dropping petabytes in capacity over the last 12 months.
This type of fraud hasn’t been proven in the used HDD space. There are many reasons used drives are sold other than exceeding usable life or warranty. Companies over forecast capacity or simply go bankrupt all the time (see crypto / ai), and those drives are sold. Considering drives are 30-50% more expensive now than they were 6-12 months ago the incentive and profitability of resale has increased.

I would never trust a dev defined SemVer as more than a relatively useless indicator of compatibility. I make sure there’s proper unit and integration testing to prevent external dependencies breaking production. If it’s a major dependency I check the release notes every version.
Yes but the for-profit Mozilla corporation will selfishly maintain control of the golden goose to the bitter end, even if they destroy it. They offer no value without Firefox and they know it.
That’s why Firefox should be relinquished to a non-profit which is not associated with a for-profit company in any way.
Think about it logically. A non-trivial proportion of Firefox users are power users. We’re talking about millions of well paid IT professionals, programmers, academics, etc who trend older and wealthier. I don’t know about you, but if Firefox was truly non-profit and focused development on user-voted features, instead of for-profit SaaS services, I’d be willing to donate $100+ a year for the rest of my life out of principle. We’re not talking about some hidden open source library here. We’re talking about the only viable browser alternative to big tech. We’re talking about a product equivalent to Wikipedia or the internet archive in importance (both of which I donate to annually, and will likely continue to forever).
I do not donate to Firefox because of the Mozilla corporation and their for-profit influence over Firefox, and I never will as long as they are involved.
I really prefer the Bitwarden approach to versioning, by including the date like YYYY.MM.DD.whatever. Makes it easy to know how old a version is at a glance, and easier to remember.
As others suggested you don’t need all your historic mail on your mailserver. My approach to email archival is the same as all my historic data — a disorganized dumping ground that’s like my personal data lake, and separate service(s) to crawl, index, and search it (e.g. https://www.recoll.org/)

Customizability, and most importantly portable customizability, is non-existent in most modern software. Even highly configurable FOSS products like Firefox take time, effort, and above average technical skills to mirror configs between not only clients, but identical clients, and even just keeping them in sync. You shouldn’t have to log into their cloud or jump through hoops; just export a config file(s) and import it onto another machine; if versions are identical, the state of the product and its feature-set should be identical (e.g. not temp, session, or 3rd party data; though in the case of Firefox all extension configs should apply too, as they are part of its ecosystem/feature-set).
As a consumer, I often wish that there were a requirement for ALL digital product software and services to export/import their current config, including all “user” data, to open-source compatible, lossless formats — this would be the most effective method to free consumers and businesses alike from vendor lock-in and monopolization — but as a developer I’m aware that would be a nightmare, especially for all pre-existing software.
Yep. What is the likelihood of coincidence when 1) Google’s just released manifest V3 2) is cracking down hard on ad blocking 3) is failing hard at being more than a nuisance to ad block users and 4) Mozilla is attacking its most widely used 3rd party feature; the core feature of Google’s scorn.
This is why I don’t donate money to Firefox. Mozilla, the for-profit corporation, should not exist. It’s a parasitic entity that has no value, need, or right to exist. Users should be able to donate to Firefox and vote on specific features, without Mozilla swinging its dick around and ass blasting us all. If donations were transparent and accountable, I’d donate hundreds of dollars a year, for the rest of my life. Because of Mozillas continuous ratfuckery, they get nothing from me. I wonder how true that is for the majority of its user base.
