They could probably do something similar with YouTube and a big patreon following. But they would have had trouble starting from scratch the way that Discovery’s production money allowed. Would have taken a lot longer to ramp up, but also a lot less lawyers would have been involved probably.
They want to be able to cash in on algorithmic fame. That’s also why they sensor swears. Because the advertisers don’t like them and then the algorithm drops posts with naughty words.

Cheap led tvs were like 1/5 the cost of Analog TVs. The digital switch over really finished them off too.
Really it’s the size/price that did it though. My buddy paid I think $3k for a maybe 40” Trinitron in 99-2000. It probably weighed 200lbs. Looked amazing at the time but it was probably only months before big leds came out. Plasma might have been a thing then but we’re like $10k+
The ruby on rails generators do this sort of magic. It’s fun while you’re using it, but a nightmare to remember how to use on a 10 year old project.
