Might be true, but is some real bullshit. There are protocols/programs that do work on multiple platform (including not web) with privacy settings turned up. Employers should consider if they want Google listening in on all of their business discussions before forcing its buggy platform on employees. I’ll wait for the one that cries that it has Google Calendar integration, when you don’t need Google for a calendar.

While you are setting up that server for Jitsi, realize its XMPP server can cover your text chat & presence needs too.

ASUS did this recently & lost a lawsuit in the UK for lying to customers to say unlock servers were only temporarily down for a couple months (lol)

Their brain is certainly smoother to do this. Motivation I mostly hear has to do with network effect, user base. I disagree with this tho since the only way you move that network is to start hosting elsewhere & getting folks used to it (aka be the change you want to see); ‘early adopting’ & momentum in this direction is what drives a new audience to try, collaborate, contribute to these platform some otherwise wouldn’t have tried. You might lose some commits, but others (those banned from the service for US sanctions or philosophically refuse to have an account) now do get access. That might be the smaller pool, but this audience is rarely considered or catered to.

Even if you want “visibility” or some other marketing term, a compromise would be to have a read-only mirror. But a mirror like this would contain the entire history that would be used to train their AI that they sell back to us.

One of many reason tho, I have been using Darcs or Pijul over Git in recent times to create yet another barrier to not having code hosted on the Microsoft platform. If Pijul’s Nest supported tarball archives it would be ‘good enough’… & it only supports converting from, not to Git 🤣

Ladybird needs to support openness & stop using MS GitHub & Discord as their only means of communication/collaboration.

I would be mad if this would be next to fall since I use it. I don’t self-host Matrix since it is too expensive being built on a fundamental ‘eventual consistency’ model mirroring all text & attachments for all users in every DM & room to your storage—not to mention the Python implementation server & even the Rust one use much more system resources than other open chat options. It’s the same for Mastodon specifically too which but Ruby this time—with eventual consistency chewing up GiBs of storage making small players shut down instances. I would not be surprised tho if their Matrix server fell next just based on hosting cost.

Wanting to get folks off proprietary garbage like Slack, Telegram, & Discord was the right idea but moving to Matrix will prove to be a mistake as nodes are too expensive to run therefore leads to the centralization we need to escape. With the poor performance of the flagship Element client too, casual users think it is too damn slow (literally takes 2 minutes to even get to a screen with text in my browser & it isn’t even done syncing). There are more mature technologies with lower running costs that could have/should have/can be embraced.

SSB was killed after it sat behind an about:config flag, then their telemetry (that most power users disable) reported folks weren’t using. But what average users would be using a setting they would need to poke around to find. It’s a real shame too since I want to say it was PeppermintOS that was largely built around PWAs.

It looks all theoretical—you could say similar about any laptop at that rate of buying a random panel & popping it in while praying it works. If you don’t have a plan for the original panel, congrats: you created e-waste since the OEM isn’t selling what you need. Maybe they should just offer a tested version since there is obvious demand.
