Army generals are mostly well educated and very well read men who deal with the whole world and not just their neck of the woods, and possibly more important is that in the world of the military they do not have the monopoly on violence. They have to deal with adversaries who are equals and thus changes the power dynamic A LOT. A police captain can in the end just escalate all the way to the national guard and stomp out anything… in the military they cannot as their escalations immediately leads to deaths and escalates all the way to nuclear Armageddon. So luckily they are of a different breed.

But now, trump might replace the top brass with his loyalists, (loyalty > competence) fast tracking some appointments of people that normally not have made it to that level.

The guard rails are off… the world is in for a wild ride.

Power and prestige. In the US the billionaire class is revered as the shining beacon. Everyone wants to be them and history tells them they can be. You just have to get lucky. Like winning the lottery.

Top brass seem to swing the other way though. These are generations that tangled with Russia and china for decades now. They see much more behind the curtain than others do.

Very cool video. Good example of how a system is more than the sum of its parts. How a fire department blocks changes to road infrastructure because of their oversized trucks, keeping wide roads, inviting higher speeds, leading to more traffic accidents.

Especially his closing accusation is very good. How fire departments will protest bikebanes but not come out in favor of reducing roadlode parking or bus express lanes. It just shows that they lack vision.

Well, the fun should be in some light banter. Someone reported for vile hate speech should get a system wide mute as a warning for some time and if they cannot behave after, take away their chat rights permanent. Why should it be tolerated? And people after that intent on ruining stuff for others, can be banned outright.

It can all be done on account/license key, IP and hardware ID.

Big tech is more than able to fix this issue, they are just not willing. And the lack of consequences for the last decade just made the problem worse.

I think that crowd sourcing the stuff should be easy. Hey user xyz you have been added to the mutelists of 50 people now, this means your chat will be monitored by our chat monitoring system more actively. Hey user xyz you have been added to the Blocklist of 50 people, be aware your gameplay will be actively monitored by our systems and further reports could lead to a suspension of your account.

Etc etc.

More games should just allow you to disable chat. A friend of mine used to play with a little post-it covering the chat. It allowed him to enjoy the game.

There is a wide gap between some shit talking and the vile hatred you see people spewing online.

Telling people to harden up when smack talking their mother or their gameplay might fly… but idlt does not apply when people tell you to kill yourself in Ernest, Harras you outside a game.

With gaming becoming more mainstream, the tight knit communities playing on curated servers and policed by community admins have been replaced by platforms hosted by big tech and infested by the assholes that used to be too cool for gaming and the basement dwellers that used to be isolated and are now emboldened by their fellow basement dwellers, rednecks, and other generally unlovable people.

I’m so happy my brain does not allow me to process the chat while I’m playing games. I really have to stop and type something.

But the times I have seen examples of the vile stuff people put in chat, I just get sad… very sad… Mostly for the people that think that stuff is anything you can say to someone else.

Yep. Several years ago I switched and it took a little getting used to. But now I would not want it any other way. The plugins in the browsers make it convenient and also a proper app on your mobile and you are set to go. Click on a password field and then you can click on the plugin to fill the fields.
