Its a refreshing experience in a world where products and services will push the legal boundaries in order to:

  1. Hide or mask spyware and bloatware

  2. Make unauthorized system settings changes.

  3. Only offer access to certain features or setting if you downlad their app.

  4. Changing everything from opt in as default to opt out being the new default.

  5. And the cherry on top is the same companies will also burry the means to contact support while face fucking their useless shit for brains AI bot at every selection you choose.

*lookin at you Google, Microsoft, paypal, amazon, Samsung

Snapchat was just the most recent app I used that triggered this realization but there are literally dozens (*insert Arrested Development’s ‘never nude’ meme) of other products and services that are in the same boat of initially being perceived as annoying but now are viewed in a more appreciated light.

Bonus anecdotal LPT: The simplest way I found to describe the enshitiffication movement to Gen X’ers and Boomers is by explaining to them that its when a company actively engages in implementing changes that lower the quality of the product or service you pay for with the intent of providing a solution option that will either cost more money or force the user to grant the product or service permissions that will, for example, allow them to mine your data and sell it for profit.

This reminds me of how Signal nags you constantly about entering your PIN, Only to find out it’s not a requirement, they’re just trying to help you memorize it.

What is signal? To me when I hear someone refer to signals they are referring to a gas station chain called signals. Which also have payment machines for credit cards that will prompt you to enter your card’s pin but you can just hit the enter button without putting in your pin in order to process the purchase as credit card payment and not as an atm card payment.

If you are referring to a different company, product or service that isnt the gas station signals, than I am absolutely delighted at this mix up and how much the two have crossed verbiage uses. 🤣🍻

I live in Ruralasfuck, USA. Most of my peer mellenials think the word “firmware” is some made up Harry Potter nerd shit. Thats coming from my generation who grew up with technology. You start going up the generation ladder from there and it doesn’t get any better. The older generations will maintain a similar void of understanding but its delivered with more homophobic or racist sentence enhancers than I normally get from my mellenial peers. Usually will sound something like, “What the fuck is firmware? More made up shit you learned from those Harry Potter f*gs you used to jerk off to?”

Snapchat gives you options to not give permissions to access your decice’s media, notifications, contacts, text and/or calls. It has no active background activity or network activity. It only stores content that I give it authorization for. That is not anywhere close to meeting the defined parameters to be considered spyware. It literally qualifies it as not being spyware.

Spyware will not request consent because its purpose is to access data without your knowing about it. When legitimate software includes spyware, they are only able to do so by burying the consent in the installation agreement. They dont give users options to opt out of it.
